Gdańsk Music Festival

Gdańsk Music Festival is by design devoted to classical music with a possibility to widen the program with other music genres or even arts which may contribute to its popularization. Through the expression "classical music" one should understand as well early music as contemporary music for which romanticism and XX th century modernism compositions have been a counterpoint. Through the expression "other genres of music and art" one should understand jazz, popular music, multimedia arts, which combined with classical music, bring it closer to the audience least oriented in this matter. Gdańsk Music Festival differentiates from the other music festivals with the diversity of music specializations. The artists selection criteria was on one hand to choose the worldwide famous stars and on the other to promote young artists. In Gdańsk over the centuries had worked many composers whose names were persistently subscribed to the worlds culture heritage. Paweł Siefert, Francisco de Rivulo, Andrzej Hakenberger, Jan Walenty Meder, Freislich family - are just a few examples from the captivating history of the city by the Motława River and in the same they are one of many proofs of the city´s multiculturality. In Gdańsk for the centuries were meeting and still are meeting various styles, tendencies, directions which create a kind of a platform for exchanging thoughts and beliefs, not only concerning music but also broadly understood culture. Gdańsk is a place of birth of many social movements including the most important one for contemporary Europe - Solidarność. Gdańsk in the former times was also a place, for living in which, strived many prominent artists and the posts of a Chapel Master of the City Council Chapel or the Chapel of Saint Marien Church belonged to the most desirable in Europe. Contemporary Gdańsk has then again an enormous creative potential of people and societies binded with the city and working on its ground. The festival is by design a platform of cooperation between the most important institutions which are often competing with each other on a regular basis. Gdańsk is the abode of situated in a beautiful object Polish Baltic F. Chopin Philharmonic in Gdańsk. Gdańsk is also the residence of The Academy of Music, in which for 60 years were inter alia organized: Piano Department created by professor Zbigniew Śliwiński, String Instrument Department that continues the traditions of a legendary class of professor Stefan Herman, Vocal and Acting Department carries on equally legendary achievements of professor Barbara Iglikowska or Organ Unit whose students are the winners of the most prestigious organ competitions in Europe. Last but not least Gdańsk is a place in which, as in the former centuries work and create great composers like Eugeniusz Głowski, Krzysztof Olczak, or among younger Agnieszka Stuldzińska and Radosław Łuczkowski.

The form of the festival is open . The influence on every edition of the festival has its message and an Artist in Residence. In 2009 a composer Elżbieta Sikora has agreed to take this function, and in 2010, in Frederic Chopin's year the artist in residence will become a prominent pianist, laureate of Xth International F. Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1980 -Ewa Pobłocka. The special guest of the festival will be the winner of the same competition and also a member of jury of the next edition that will take place in autumn 2010 - Dang Thai Son. Programme of Gdańsk Music Festival 2010 presents on one hand, Ewa Pobłocka as pianist and pedagogue, and on the other music of Frederic Chopin connected with works of the composers for whom it was an inspiration and figures which were inspiration for the music itself. Ewa Pobłocka will play with a symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, string quartet and will also perform in an extraordinary musical - literary dialogue with Gdańsk's writer Paweł Huelle. As a pedagogue she will show herself through the performances of her students and through the performances of her daughter - Ewa Leszczyńska. She will appear in a double role: as a pianist, during a concert with Katarzyna Trylnik in a programme of which, we would hear i. a. Frederic Chopin Songs, and as a vocalist performing Mozart's Aria during the final concert under the baton of Wojciech Michniewski.

Repertoire of Gdańsk Music Festival 2010 will be diverse and Chopin's music will play a leading role in it. His compositions will be included in a programme of recital that would be performed by Dang Thai Son, during concerts of Ewa Pobłocka with Silesian Quartet (i. a. Fantasy on Polish Themes), the performance of a laureate of an award which is given by Gdańsk Music Festival on Polish Piano Festival in Słupsk. The audience will hear many of his compositions like famous Sonata b - minor in an unusual jazz project organized by Andrzej Jagodziński Trio. In the festival's programme one will find also the music of W. A. Mozart and his contemporary - R. Schumann. Chopin from the beginning of his music education was a great admirer of Mozart and showed it in Variations for piano and orchestra on a Theme from "Don Giovanni". It was this composition that initiated his great fame and Robert Schumann after reading a score said: Gentleman! Hats off! It is a genius! During the inauguration concert on which a soloist will be young outstanding pianist: Gilles Vonsattel, Schumann's Piano Concert will be performed, we will hear also his Piano Quintet and two Mozart piano concerts i. a. during the concert of Amadeus Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Agnieszka Duczmal. One of the concerts will be sacrificed to the music of Chopin's teacher - Józef Elsner. His Mass in G major op. 75 - Muzyka podczas Mszy Świętej Z odgłosem wdzięcznych pieni (Music during Sacred Mass with the sound of graceful voices, words Kazimierz Brodziński) with the participation of i. a. Prima Vista Quartet. A regular element of Gdańsk Music Festival's programme is a concert devoted to the music of contemporary Gdańsk composers. In 2010 it will be vocal music a cappella, which will be performed by Polish Chamber Choir under the direction of Jan Łukaszewski. As in previous years in 2010 Gdańsk Music Festival proposes the concert of a prominent, world renowned, foreign orchestra. On 29th April 2010 at the festival there will be a concert of The State Hermirage Orchestra from St. Petersburg (Camerata St. Petersburg). As usual the concerts will take place in the whole region. In 2010 they will be organized in Elbląg, Gdynia, Sopot, Starogard Gdański, Kolbudy and Trąbki Wielkie.
