GMF 2013
* * *Gdańsk Music Festival 2013 is a continuation of a project which was realized for the first time in 2008. The form of the festival is open, however the influence on every edition has its message and an Artist in Residence. In 2009 a composer – Elżbieta Sikora agreed to take this function, in 2010 it was a prominent pianist, laureate of Xth International F. Chopin Competition in Warsaw – Ewa Pobłocka, in 2011 on of the greatest stars of Polish vocalistic – Stefania Toczyska, in 2012 an outstanding violinist- Konstanty Andrzej Kulka took this function. An Artist in Residence of Gdańsk Music Festival 2013 would be a prominent composer, arranger and pianist – Włodzimierz Nahorny.
The compositions of one of the greatest masters of improvisation in the history of music – Johann Sebastian Bach would be performed as a programme framework of the whole edition and some of the single concerts.The festival’s programme would be mostly devoted to relations between classical music, jazz and the art of improvisation, 200th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi and 100th birthday of Witold Lutosławski would be also included.
On 12th April, on inauguration of the festival the audience will have the unique opportunity to hear famous Capella Amsterdam and renowned Belgian baroque orchestra Il Gardelino performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s Passion of St. John. The concert will be conducted by one of the great authorities of music in this period – Daniel Reuss. Masterpiece of Bach will also draw the festival to a close on 20th April with the concert of Polish Chamber Choir and Capella Bydgostientis under the direction of Jan Łukaszewski. The ensemble will perform The great mass in B-minor. Włodzimierz Nahorny wil play with his sextet and trio, with the latter he will present his own transcriptions of Polish composer’s pieces: Fryderyk Chopin and Karol Szymanowski, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Roman Maciejewski and prepared specially for this occasion transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach compositions.
Nahorny just as Janusz Hajdun begun his career in a famous Bim- Bom theatre and To Tu cabaret. About their history and also the story of the beginning of jazz in Poland will tell the exhibition organized together with Academy of Music in Gdańsk.Especially meaningful and significant will be the concert of Nahorny concert in Janusz Hajdun Radio Gdańsk Concert Studio broadcasted in Radio Gdańsk.The relations between classical music and jazz will be also show during Krzysztof Herdzin concerts and the performance of Polish Philharmonic “Sinfonia Baltica”, which under the baton of Bohdan Jarmołowicz and with Filip Wojciechowski pianist playing both jazz and classical music his Trio and one of the best of Polish saxophonists Henryk Miśkiewicz will present compositions of Chopin and Komeda – both in original and transcriptions.
Vocal Gala with the soloists of St. Peterburg’s Mariinsky Theatre with Polish Baltic Orchestra led by the first guest conductor of the Theatre, Italian Fabio Mastrangelo will be a significant event as well as concert on 100th Lustoslawski birthday: extraordinary piano recital of Ewa Pobłocka.
As on every edition of the festival there will be the concerts of Gdańsk music – old and contemporary, and as always the concerts will take place in the whole region, in Sopot, Starogard Gdański, Elbląg, Trąbki Wielkie and Pruszcz Gdański.
