About Festival
* * *Gdańsk Music Festival is a continuation of a project which was realised for the first time in 2008. The form of the festival is open however an individual touch to its every edition gives its message or an Artist of Residence. Among prominent artists who took this role were Elżbieta Sikora, Ewa Pobłocka, Stefania Toczyska, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Włodzimierz Nahorny, Daniel Reuss and Maxim Vengerov.
The festival commemorated important anniversaries: of F. Chopin, W. Lutosławski and G.Verdi. The first edition of the festival was dedicated to two great Gdańsk pedagogues: professor Stefan Herman and professor Zbigniew Śliwiński.
In 2017 legendary Mischa Maisky will be an Artist in Residence. Great cellist will be the soloist of an inauguration concert, which will be conducted by Maxim Vengerov, violinist, pedagogue and a conductor. Gdańsk Music Festival 2017 will be dominated with string instruments because of the Artist in Residence name and naturally it will relate to 15th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. For the second time one of the prizes on a competition was the concert on Gdańsk Music Festival, which is why its winner Veriko Tchumburidze will perform on it. What is more the laureates from previous years will play on the festival, who with other prominent Polish musicians will create series of chamber concerts, which will make a kind of dialogue between the whole group of string instruments. As a dialogue series can be counted a concert of Dorota and Piotr Anderszewski, arousing great interest. Historical instruments will also be present. On a final concert we will Saint John Passion of J. S. Bach with a renowned Orchestra of the 18th century. On a festival will also perform one of the most famous baroque violinist in the world Giuliano Carmignola.
